THE Department of Public Safety-Criminal Investigation Division is actively investigating the theft of personnel files at the Saipan Mayor’s Office, DPS said.

Asked about the theft incident, Saipan Mayor Ramon “RB” Camacho said he filed a complaint with DPS on Aug. 3, 2023, and reported the missing personnel files of his office’s former employees.

“There was no break-in, but those personnel files are government property. All files of former employees that transferred are missing,” Camacho said. He declined to elaborate.

Camacho earlier discovered that a total of $98,137.14 in lump sum payments of accrued annual leave of former and current municipal employees were taken from the Saipan mayor’s office funds without his knowledge or authorization.

At a Senate Committee on Fiscal Affairs budget hearing on July 14, 2023, Department of Finance Secretary Tracy Norita told lawmakers the payouts were authorized and legal.

In response, Camacho said, “I did not authorize it.”

He said the Office of the Public Auditor is looking into the lump sum annual leave payments that he did not authorize.
