Man arrested for assaulting another person

Khandakar S. Rahaman is escorted by a Corrections officer to a bail hearing at the judicial building Friday.

POLICE arrested Khandakar S. Rahaman on Aug. 3, 2023, for confronting and assaulting another person over a malicious comment about his fiancée.

Rahaman admitted punching the victim, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the pavement.

According to a responding police officer, the victim appeared to be unconscious but still breathing. The victim had a laceration on the left side of his nose and was bleeding heavily from that area. Police also noted that the victim was also bleeding from his head and saw a pool of blood on the parking lot of Afterna Supermarket.

Rahaman, 22, appeared before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho on Friday for a bail hearing. He was charged with assault and battery and disturbing the peace.

At the hearing, Rahaman was represented by Assistant Public Defender Emily Thomsen while Chief Prosecutor Chester Hinds appeared for the government.

After the defendant posted a $3,000 unsecured bond, Judge Camacho granted the defense's request to release Rahaman to his father, a third-party custodian.

“If defendant needs to go to the hospital, store, among others, a third-party custodian needs to be present at all times,” the judge ordered.

The defendant was ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 11 at 10 a.m., and for an arraignment on Aug. 21 at 9 a.m.

According to the complaint against Rahaman, he and three other friends came from the beach and were walking back to one of their houses when two of them, the victim included, went to a store to buy drinks.

Rahaman later confronted the victim about what the victim said about Rahaman’s fiancée, causing them to argue back and forth.

When the victim told Rahaman that he was just joking, the defendant got mad and hit the victim with his right hand which caused him to fall to the ground, court documents stated.
