A FILM screening featuring local filmmakers will be held at Regal Saipan Megaplex this Friday at 5 p.m.

The screening is the culminating project of the “Cinema on Saipan: Movie Making in the Marianas” program, a joint project between Northern Marianas College’s Community Development Institute and the Public School System.

According to a media release, the program is “designed to introduce PSS high school students to the art and craft of filmmaking.”

Students spent three weeks learning the principles of filmmaking and storytelling; screenplay writing; hands-on film production training in cinematography; sound recording; and more.

At Friday’s screening, NMC-CDI will screen films directed by students Sheryne Yang, Ulusmar Ogumoro-Uludong, Raja Sevugan, NMC-CDI Director Monique Sablan said.

She said the films will be available for public viewing on NMC’s website after Friday’s premier.

The program is an opportunity to develop the talents of the youth, she added.

“It’s really important for us as educational institutions to expose our kids to a variety of job opportunities,” Sablan said. “Workforce development happens when people understand the diverse workforce we have. [The program] opens the door for students to see potential career pathways. If you put effort into something, especially with kids, they can excel.”

According to NMC’s website, CDI provides training and services “directly to individual residents, businesses, government agencies, and community organizations in the CNMI.”
